Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an age requirement at Shelburne Bay?

Shelburne Bay welcomes individuals and couples age 60 and older.

Do I need to sign a lease?

Most residents intend to stay on a long-term basis, so a one-year lease is required. In order to meet the unique needs of our residents, if health changes dictate a move, the lease can be ended with appropriate notification.

Are short-term leases ever offered?

Yes, depending on availability. Shelburne Bay is pleased to provide short term or respite care stays.

May I bring my own furniture?

Yes, your apartment is yours to furnish and decorate as you wish.

May I have guests for meals and overnight visits?

Your guests are always welcome at Shelburne Bay. If you are having friends or family join you for a meal, please let our staff know a day in advance. There is also a private dining room if you’d like to hold a special gathering.

Is transportation available?

You’ll always be able to get to your destination in Shelburne Bay’s 14-passenger wheelchair accessible bus. There are weekly scheduled trips to local stores and restaurants as well as thoughtfully planned social outings. Transportation for more personal use, such as doctor’s appointments or trips to the airport, is easily arranged by scheduling in advance.

May I bring my pet?

Yes, pets are part of the Shelburne Bay family too.  Both dogs and cats are permitted as long as residents are appropriately able to care for them. Please check our pet policy for full details.

Is the application and admission process complicated?

In order to ensure that Shelburne Bay is meeting your needs and providing the most appropriate accommodations possible, our admission process is thorough, but not complicated. Our admissions staff will be available to provide assistance with every step. You can expect to complete a detailed application and have your physician fill out a health assessment form. If you are entering Residential Care or Memory Care, you will also meet with our Health Services Director.

What if my health changes?

We understand that health changes are a part of aging.  Knowing that you’d like to remain at Shelburne Bay, we have three separate levels of care. If your health changes are minor or temporary, the Enhanced Living Program provided by the VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties can help you remain comfortably in your apartment.  With more significant changes in health, we will help you transition to the most appropriate level of care at Shelburne Bay. Should we not be able to meet your needs, we have established relationships with other high quality health care providers in the area and will help you coordinate those services.
